Group A Racing Jumps To 2nd In The Championship At Barber Motorsports Park
Following another very successful weekend of speed and consistency; Group A Racing finishes Barber Motorsports Park 2nd in the championship with Platinum class driver Steve Jenks. Dennis Kelly makes his series debut making big advancements in development running PRO 1500 class.
Going into qualifying the team and drivers were confident given the pace that was shown through out the promoter test sessions and official practice sessions. The session would unfortunately have many red flag interruptions, making it difficult to get a clear lap in. Despite that, Jenks was able to still salvage a 4th place qualifying result in his #68 Audien Hearing Aid, Clean Life Product, Group A Racing Radical SR10 XXR.
Race one would see an incident on the opening lap and corner with the leaders in the Platinum class. Group A Racing drivers of Jenks and Kelly would make it through, but Jenks would incur some damage. Despite his wounded car, Jenks was able to push on the remainder of the race. With his wounded Radical SR10, Jenks was still able to claim a 2nd place result, earning another podium. Dennis Kelly would see tremendous progress in his debut race. Working with coaches and engineers provided from Group A Racing to learn and develop his was able to drastically cut down his deficit to the cars and in front and move up many positions.
Race two saw an intense 5 car battle amongst the top Platinum class drivers trading positions back and forth the entire race with good hard clean racing. Having pace in hand with his Group A Racing machine, Steve Jenks charged from his 5th to finish another 2nd . Steve would finish right on the gearbox of the race winner, wishing for just a few more laps. This race result would launch Steve to the championship lead at this point in the Platinum class. Dennis Kelly would continue to gain valuable race experience and see many passes made, an unfortunate late race spin would have him fall down the final results sheet. Very valuable experience and development was still gained to continue his learning.
Race 3 incurred a 1 hour delay with heavy thunder and lightning rain storms moving through the Birmingham Alabama area. The first wet race of the season would add in a new element for the drivers to deal with, especially newcomer Dennis Kelly who had never driven on track in the rain before. Group A Racing drivers Steve Jenks would have to settle for 6th in class and a DNF for Kelly. Following the completion of the event, Steve Jenks now sits 2nd in the Platinum Class Championship only 8 points out of the lead.
“All-in-all this was a good weekend in the championship for us” stated team owner Jonathan Scarallo. “We leave this event 2nd in the championship, only few out of the lead and much better position than after the season opener. Even with that we clearly have left a lot on the table, have a lot more pace in hand which is very confident inspiring for us a team and our drivers for the remainder of the season.”
The next event for Radical Cup North America is June 19-22 at Road America, another event where the series runs alongside the NTT Indy Car Series.
