Group A Racing Dominates At Road Atlanta
Group A Racing made a big statement this past weekend at Road Atlanta for Radical Cup. Putting on a dominate performance all weekend taking home many pieces of hardware and re igniting the championship fight in the Platinum Class.
Thursday would see a massive amount of track time, just shy of 3 hours on Thursday alone for practice. Throughout the day Group A Racing Steve Jenks would be towards the top all on used tires. Mid-day would see his first set of new tires go on the car to rocket to the P1 and stay there with a big margin over the entire field for the rest of the day.
Friday would present qualifying and the first of three races for the event. Continuing the trend from the day before, Jenks would put in a dominate lap despite session having red flag stoppages to take the overall pole and important bonus point.
Starting from pole in race 1, Jenks would get a good start to pull a lead over the field and gapping them every single lap. Full course caution would erase that big lead on lap 6. When the race got restarted, Jenks would take off and pick up where he left off to gap the field setting fastest lap of the race, which is worth yet another bonus point. Steve would lead the field in his Group A Racing machine until another full course yellow would come out to erase that dominate lead he had established. When the race resume Jenks would show his muscle again taking off from one of his championship rivals; Louie Schriber, to pull another gap in route to a dominate victory leading every single lap.
Race 2 would see Steve Jenks starting from pole yet again in his Group A Racing machine due to his fastest lap of the race set in race 1. Jenks would get off to another good start from the initial drop of the green. Different this time would be competitor Chip Romer showing immense pace had not seen all weekend and charging from farther down the grid to even pass Steve for the lead. Jenks would not relent and put immense pressure back on to take the lead back for himself. Jenks would put his head down to set the fastest lap of the race yet again and not look back to win race 2.
Race 3 had Jenks starting from pole yet again making a complete sweep for the event. He would get off to another start. Yet again, Jenks would have Chip Romer on his tail and take the lead at first. Race 3 features the mandatory pit stop in which Steve would come in before Chip to attempt for an undercut by looking for clear space. The plan would work for Jenks to get clear space, consistently resetting fastest lap of the race and take a 10 second lead. Unfortunately, a technical glitch would cause his pitstop to be 2.7 seconds to fast to series minimum time to result in a stop and go penalty. This would see Jenks have to settle from 5th in what was set to be a complete clean sweep weekend in dominate fashion.
“We definitely put the paddock on its heels this weekend” stated Group A Racing Team Principal Jonathan Scarallo. Really unfortunate and unlucky of us to not have a complete sweep of pole and victory in every race but this was still a tremendous event and really showcased what this team produces for our drivers with phenomenally fast race cars and all other resources needed to go win.”
