Group A Racing Crowned World Champions at Radical World Finals.
Group A Racing Crowned World Champions at Radical World Finals, this past weekend at VIRginia International Raceway. The weekend featured all the ups, downs, and drama as to be expected with World Champion titles on the line.
Thursday & Friday would feature an immense 3 hours of testing & official practice sessions where Group-A Racings’ Steve Jenks would be seen at the top of the timing charts on numerous occasions. Friday afternoon would see qualifying occur which set the grid for heat one. The times from qualifying would have the top 6 inverted for heat two grid. Heat 3 would line up based on heat two’s fastest lap. Drivers will earn points for finishing position in each heat to then configure the grid for Sundays winner take all main finale to crown a world champion.
Jenks set the blistering pace early to put his Group-A Racing machine on pole in qualifying by a healthy margin. Sadly, his times would be disallowed as the right front ride height was found to be about 1 millimeter below the legal limit. A technicality not increasing performance but did fall a foul.
Jenks in his #68 Audien Hearing Group A Racing SR10 XXR would have to start at the rear of the first heat but would not stay there long. With immense pace in hand from his Group-A Racing machine, Jenks would cut through the field at rapid rate. Even passing cars on two different occasions in the intense 155MPH esses! Steve would charge to take the lead with 10 minutes still remaining. From there never looking back, continuing to gap the field and take the win in the first heat despite starting last. Immense recovery by Steve & team.
Heat 2 would see Jenks have to replicate the same work again cutting through the field from the rear. Mid race would see Steve up to 3rd and on the gearbox of the two cars in front when a full course yellow would come out. On the restart Steve applied pressure to find away past befor another caution to come out eating immense amount of time and sadly ending the race. Jenks would have to settle for 3rd in his second charge through the field.
Third and final heat Jenks would be able to start 2nd on Sunday morning. A slight mistake would see him drop the 3rd at the start. Battles would intensive as competitors were able to build tire temp in the very cold morning. While applying pressure to the car in front, the competitor would spin forcing Jenks to go off track to avoid a nasty collision. The of course excursion would pack the radiators full of grass forcing Steve to come into the pits, so the crew could clean it out. While staying on the lead lap and setting the fastest lap of the race immense time loss from coming into the pits would have Jenks down the results sheet in the final heat.
Finally, the winner takes all final to crown a World Champion late morning. After adding points from the heats Steve would see himself starting on the outside pole next to long time Radical Cup competitor Louis Schriber. The start would see Schriber get a good jump and have Jenks in the middle 3 wide with Wagner and Gorski funneling into turn 1. The funneling down affect would see Jenks exit turn one in 3rd behind Gorski in 2nd. Steve would find his way past Gorski later that lap to then set his sights on the leader. Over the next two laps Jenks would set the fastest lap of the race to run down Schriber for the lead. Immediately creating a passing opportunity in turn 1 which featured contact to cause Jenks into a half spin falling back to 3rd again. Steve would put his head down immediately with immense pace in his Group-A Racing machine quickly re catching the leader. Immediately setting up the perfect over under move as he baited the leader to immensely out brake himself. While crossing over though Jenks would light up the tires from his turbo Eco Boost to spin. Re gather the car up in the grass but would spin again getting back on track, then later that same lap spun while tires still dirty. Now 28 minutes remaining and 49 seconds behind. All hope seems to be lost. Minutes later a full course caution would come out to allow Jenks to pack back up. Race restart with 18 minutes remaining, 5th in class and 5 other lap cars between him and the leader. Good restart saw him make quick work of most of the out of class lap cars. He would find way past Wayne Williams & Scott Wagner in the same lap to move up to 3rd now with 15 minutes remaining. Fire in the eyes to re run down Greg Gorski in 2nd to pass him and now have 10 minutes to try and re captivate the lead once for all. Re setting fastest lap of the race Jenks would re run down the leader yet again now with 8 minutes remaining. The pace of his Group-A Racing machine is visibly undeniable. A look into turn 1 but previous incidents and time in hands makes him think again. Then a massive run out of infamous oak tree turn would see Jenks pull along side of Schriber the leader with 3 minutes remaining to take the lead cleanly once and for all in the closing moments. Clear track with 2 laps remaining, Jenks blistered away to come home with an unbelievable recovery drive to win, being crowned champion of the world!
“I think we are all still in shock” stated Group-A Racing owner Jonathan Scarallo. “This entire event has had a years worth of ups and down, the feature race alone felt like it was a careers worth of ups and downs for an impossible recovery! A recovery only possibly because Steve executed so well with a wicked fast Group-A Racing machine. So proud of everybody involved and now can be crown World Champs!”
